Always looking for the better sound in music, he got his first guitar at age 6...it was plastic with a picture of Elvis Presley on the top alongside another picture of a ‘hound dog’.
With this fine instrument in hand, he embarked on what would become a lifelong obsession with making music.
Begging his parents along the way he was able to acquire somewhat better quality instruments (at Christmas and Birthdays) and join the ever popular ‘garage bands’ all through late grade school to high school. Some of these bands made great music/lousy people, or had great people/terrible music.
Somewhat disillusioned, he ‘let’ his parents ‘put’ him in the Marine Corps(under aged at 17). He learned a lot in that war, and figured out that you couldn’t sneeze without dribbling on another guitar player, so took up pedal steel guitar.
Having spent some time in a foxhole with a music lover from ‘down south’, he got introduced to bands like Poco, Byrds(Sweetheart of the Rodeo), and the Flying Burrito Bros. This changed his life! Country music played hard!A short stint in New England bands, and it was off to Texas in 1976. Before getting into a recording life as first call in the 6 major studios in Houston he worked with local/major bands including:
- Dogtooth Violet
- Fat Cat
- Gatemouth Brown
- Rhonna Reeves
- B.W. Stevenson
- Mark Chesnutt
In 1987, he got a call from a then unknown artist named Clint Black to do ‘a few demos’. After a whirlwind ride with ZZ Top’s manager Bill Ham, signing with RCA Records, playing everywhere from the Greek Theatre in L.A., to Carnegie Hall in NYC, playing on 18 #1 records, and loving every minute…..20 years had passed, and retirement loomed heavy.
Luckily, a fine young artist named Jas Patrick proposed a co-produced project that has gotten that fire a-blazin’ in the musical soul of this fine artist.
Getting to rock with an amazingly talented, intuitive artist can really bring out a wealth of musically stored experience, insight and taste that only a player with this kind of career can pool with such a gifted young song writer/player.This collaboration can only mean Pure Gold for all involved.
The future is Bright.
